Release Party For Just One more: A Tribute To Larry Brown May 23!

Tim Lee, curator of Bloodshot's Just One More: A Tribute To Larry Brown will host a release celebration for the CD on Wednesday, May 23 at Carpe Librum Booksellers in Knoxville, TN. Lee will be performing with his wife Susan and Scott Miller, and Knoxville spoken word artist Jack Rentfro will be reading selections from Brown's last novel, A Miracle of Catfish, recently published by Algonquin Books.

Earlier in the day, the Lees and Miller will perform on WDVX's Blue Plate Special, which can be heard online through WDVX's site here.

SXSW MMVII (that’s 2007 for you non-Romans)

We survived another one. The exhilaration and disgust; the obsequious glad-handing; the naked pandering; the guileless tomfoolery; the grisly bathrooms; writers with onion breath from the freebie fajitas close-talking me about how great the new blah blah record is; the 2 am cadaver shuffle of 20 somethings on their first expense accounts, hands full of pizza slices and cell phones. Oh, there was some music in there too, somewhere.

We want to thank everyone who came out to the shows and party. How about them new bands we have? Them Gore Gore Girls popped some eyes with their afternoon leather outfits and kicked out the jams, and the Amsterband had all the girls swooning with their amazing harmonies and scruffy-but-still-ok-to- take-home-to-mom demeanor. We also think it was one of the best Waco sets ever. How about them new songs by Deadstring Brothers? JeeZUS, that’s as close to Ike and Tina as white folks can get. Mark Pickerel (get cracking on that new stuff—its sounds great) and Jon Rauhouse and the Silos all nailed their sets. Graham Parker got all the pointy-headed writers whipping out their notepads and Danbert Nobacon made the first appearance on the Yard Dog stage as someone dressed as a priest. And thanks as always to Carolyn Mark for starting the festivities and cracking the fifth of Cuervo with Rob at noon.

One problem, though. In the 12 years we’ve been doing the party this is the first time, I believe, that people consumed LESS beer than the year before. Consider this a warning. Don’t make me turn this car around.

We also want to super-duper thank all the folks who contributed so generously to the Kirk Rundstrom fund at the merch table. Split Lip put on some truly memorable shows in that space and it was gratifying to see how many folks took time to remember.

As for the showcase, we apologize for the more than usual amount of Waco nudity. That’s just not right.

Favorite quotations of the weekend:

Overheard on 6th street: “His voice is just so powerful, like a mix of Jeff Buckley and Pete Yorn.”

From Scott H. Biram’s dad, yelled in my ear during his showcase: “He scared us so bad, we didn’t have another kid.”

Favorite moments that actually had nothing to do with business, just joy of music: Seeing New York’s A-Bones and Sam the Sham (sure, there were no Pharaohs in the room, and the cheese factor was pretty high, but, baby, an extended version of “Wooly Bully” is pure rock and roll heaven).

Coming straight out of Springfield, MO., Amsterband specializes in what can best be described as "foot stompin' indie rock," with disarming, tossed-off anthems that owe as much to high and lonesome Ozarks bluegrass as laconic indie rock. Bloodshot will release the band's debut, Buckle in the Bible Belt, later in the year.

Split Lip Rayfield's Kirk Rundstrom Passes Away

On February 22nd, Kirk Rundstrom, the singer/songwriter/guitarist for Split Lip Rayfield and Scroat Belly, passed away after a lengthy and heroic battle against cancer.

Kirk was, without debate, one of the most dynamic and passionate performers we have ever seen. To see him on stage was to see a man totally focused on, totally POSSESSED with, the music of the moment. He never ever took his audience for granted and delivered the goods with a ferocious energy that flowed through the room. I had personally seen him play some 75 times and it was never boring, it was never phoned in and it was hard to take my eyes off him. If you left a show of theirs without sweating, without losing yourself in the joyous abandon of music, it wasn't from his lack of trying. Standing still at a Split Lip show just wasn't an option. His gift was the ability to let rock and roll well up from its purest emotional state and give it to the room in all its liberating glory.

When Kirk was diagnosed last spring, he was given just a few months. It is a testimony to his incredible spirit that he was performing into this month.The fans that came out during this time filled the venues with palpable love. To have played a part in this accumulation of affection, in this tight knit community of Split Lip lovers, over the years is truly a humbling honor. He loved playing and it showed, and the fans loved him back.

Kirk is responsible for a lot of people having a LOT of fun over the years; if everyone could have that on their resumes, the world would be a much better place.

He is missed already.

We do it once a year and YOU, the canny web surfer are the beneficiary. That's right, we've made our annual attempt to organize the workplace and turn it from a disheveled vortex of chaos into a pleasing and well mannered office humming with pure and decent industry.

Thus, we have come across piles of promotional or refurbished CDs that have accumulated over the past year and we are offering them to you at embarrassingly low prices for the entire month of February! Now, to be clear, these CDs are UNPLAYED and offer the same exact audio and artwork as the regular CDs, they are just without shrink wrap and the top spine stickers, so we cannot sell them to stores. We lose, but YOU win!!

Bloodshot to Release Just One More, A Musical Tribute to Larry Brown on May 22!

Larry Brown’s business card listed his occupation as “Human Being”. Like many other professional human beings, Larry loved music. He felt music and it showed in his writing. As he moved through the world, Larry got to know a lot of musicians, and a lot of musicians got to know Larry, either personally or through his work.

Just One More, A Musical Tribute to Larry Brown is a compilation of tunes by artists who were his friends, fans and peers. With 18 tracks, 12 of which are previously unreleased, the album has contributions from a wide range of critically acclaimed artists, among them Alejandro Escovedo (whom Larry performed with periodically), T-Model Ford, Vic Chesnutt, Jim Dickinson (with Duff Dorrough), Robert Earl Keen, Cary Hudson (Blue Mountain), Brent Best (Slobberbone, The Drams) and the North Mississippi Allstars, to name a few. Some of these songs were written for the project, songs for Larry and about his characters, such as Caroline Herring’s “Song For Fay”, exploring the title character of Fay, a novel published in 2000. The album closes with a song performed by Larry himself, accompanied by Clyde Edgerton, a Southern novelist of great renown.

“The simple concept of this disc was to put together a mix tape of sorts, the type of thing that Larry would have enjoyed listening to as he drove his little truck into the gloam’ with a cooler full of beer and an ass pocket of something that burns a little bit on the way down,” explains producer Tim Lee. “I knew him and I admired his work, and you didn’t have to know Larry well to have a keen awareness of his love of music,” he says. Benefit for Tom Curtis Tuesday Jan 31

Tom Curtis, a former bartender at the Empty Bottle and current Twisted Spoke employee, was the victim of a senseless attack on December 8th. Walking home from a friend's house
through an alley near the epicenter of Wicker Park, he was robbed by a group of young adults, beaten with a shovel about the face, neck, and head, and left for dead.

To that end, the Empty Bottle continues its charitable spirit next Tuesday, January 30th, with a benefit for Tom. The benefit, which starts at 9:30, will feature performances by Can.Ky.Ree, Galactic Inmate, and Nora O'Connor and Danny Black. Matt Fields will DJ between sets. There will be raffle prizes and, in the spirit of solidarity, all Empty Bottle employees are volunteering their time and donating their tips for the evening.

Bloodshot Signs Detroit's Gore Gore Girls--Get The Gore To Hit Stores Summer 2007!

Detroit’s Gore Gore Girls have joined the Bloodshot Records family and are set to release their third full length, Get The Gore this summer. Named for low budget thrill-king Herschell Gordon Lewis’s 1972 film, The Gore Gore Girls, Tucson Weekly described the band thusly, “Just picture the Ronettes and the Marvelettes adding girl-group harmonies and sophisticated soulfulness to a pummeling, raw energy burst not unlike the music of the MC5 and the Stooges. Yes, the Gore Gore Girls are a girl group, but they are the Ramones to the Donnas' AC/DC; they're more Runaways and L7 than the Go-Gos and the Bangles.” Get the Gore was produced by Jim Diamond, known for his work with bands like The Ponys, The White Stripes and The Dirtbombs.

Backed by Calexico, Steel Guitar Heart Attack is woozy, it’s swinging, it’s mournful, it’s joyful. You don’t need words, man, you just need a good rhythm while you’ve got the gin in the shaker. If you are a fusspot that needs some singing, there’s a few tracks sung by Neko Case, Sally Timms, Kelly Hogan and Rachel Flotard (Visqueen). These ladies will melt the ice in ANYONE’S punchbowl.

Bloodshot's most loved, reviled and feared band reunites for a handful of shows! Even today, 10 years on, people at Bloodshot come to fisticuffs when talking about the most polarizing Bloodshot band ever, Scroat Belly.
