Bloodshot to Release Just One More, A Musical Tribute to Larry Brown on May 22!

Larry Brown’s business card listed his occupation as “Human Being”. Like many other professional human beings, Larry loved music. He felt music and it showed in his writing. As he moved through the world, Larry got to know a lot of musicians, and a lot of musicians got to know Larry, either personally or through his work.

Just One More, A Musical Tribute to Larry Brown is a compilation of tunes by artists who were his friends, fans and peers. With 18 tracks, 12 of which are previously unreleased, the album has contributions from a wide range of critically acclaimed artists, among them Alejandro Escovedo (whom Larry performed with periodically), T-Model Ford, Vic Chesnutt, Jim Dickinson (with Duff Dorrough), Robert Earl Keen, Cary Hudson (Blue Mountain), Brent Best (Slobberbone, The Drams) and the North Mississippi Allstars, to name a few. Some of these songs were written for the project, songs for Larry and about his characters, such as Caroline Herring’s “Song For Fay”, exploring the title character of Fay, a novel published in 2000. The album closes with a song performed by Larry himself, accompanied by Clyde Edgerton, a Southern novelist of great renown.

“The simple concept of this disc was to put together a mix tape of sorts, the type of thing that Larry would have enjoyed listening to as he drove his little truck into the gloam’ with a cooler full of beer and an ass pocket of something that burns a little bit on the way down,” explains producer Tim Lee. “I knew him and I admired his work, and you didn’t have to know Larry well to have a keen awareness of his love of music,” he says. Just One More, A Musical Tribute to Larry Brown, A Great American Author will be in stores May 22, 2007. The tracklisting is as follows:

Benefit for Tom Curtis Tuesday Jan 31

Tom Curtis, a former bartender at the Empty Bottle and current Twisted Spoke employee, was the victim of a senseless attack on December 8th. Walking home from a friend's house
through an alley near the epicenter of Wicker Park, he was robbed by a group of young adults, beaten with a shovel about the face, neck, and head, and left for dead.

To that end, the Empty Bottle continues its charitable spirit next Tuesday, January 30th, with a benefit for Tom. The benefit, which starts at 9:30, will feature performances by Can.Ky.Ree, Galactic Inmate, and Nora O'Connor and Danny Black. Matt Fields will DJ between sets. There will be raffle prizes and, in the spirit of solidarity, all Empty Bottle employees are volunteering their time and donating their tips for the evening.

Bloodshot Signs Gore Gore Girls--Album Due Summer 2007!

Bloodshot Signs Detroit's Gore Gore Girls--Get The Gore To Hit Stores Summer 2007!

Detroit’s Gore Gore Girls have joined the Bloodshot Records family and are set to release their third full length, Get The Gore this summer. Named for low budget thrill-king Herschell Gordon Lewis’s 1972 film, The Gore Gore Girls, Tucson Weekly described the band thusly, “Just picture the Ronettes and the Marvelettes adding girl-group harmonies and sophisticated soulfulness to a pummeling, raw energy burst not unlike the music of the MC5 and the Stooges. Yes, the Gore Gore Girls are a girl group, but they are the Ramones to the Donnas' AC/DC; they're more Runaways and L7 than the Go-Gos and the Bangles.” Get the Gore was produced by Jim Diamond, known for his work with bands like The Ponys, The White Stripes and The Dirtbombs.

BS 139 THE DETROIT COBRAS Tied And True

Release Date: 4-24-07

With Tied And True, their first new record in three years, the Cobras practically done created a new genre all for themselves, delivering the sonic goods to back up some seriously supernatural soulful vocal gifts. Stretching out in the studio like never before, and including contributions from top line players like Greg Cartwright (Reigning Sound) the Cobras have created a versatile and formidable wall of Spector sound (is that timpani you’re hearing here and there? Yer goddam right it is). Be it eerie or orchestral, or pure rock and roll rough up, Tied and True puts the Cobras on a whole new level—of many sources but a genus all its own.

BS 140 GRAHAM PARKER Don't Tell Columbus

Release Date: 3-13-07

Suffused with the heft of the epic, Don’t Tell Columbus’s lyrical and emotional resonance straddles the Atlantic and evinces Graham Parker’s stature as one of the most gifted writers in rock ‘n’ roll. From the personal and metaphorically grand “The Other Side of the Reservoir” to the overtly political and swinging “Stick to the Plan,” this album ripples with tension between the melancholic, the urgent and the hopeful. Best of all, it’s wrapped in his gifted brawny pop and blue-eyed soul smarts. Only GP can have you happily humming along to songs swaddled in desperate loneliness and internal mayhem.

Scroat Belly Dates This Weekend and Next!

Bloodshot's most loved, reviled and feared band reunites for a handful of shows! Even today, 10 years on, people at Bloodshot come to fisticuffs when talking about the most polarizing Bloodshot band ever, Scroat Belly.

Catch 'em in St. Louis, Chicago and Lawrence on these dates:
Fri Jan 12 - St. Louis, MO at Blueberry Hill
Sat Jan 13 - Chicago, IL at Empty Bottle w/ Devil in a Woodpile
Sat Feb 3 - Lawrence, KS at the Bottleneck

You know half the members of this band from their subsequent time in Split Lip Rayfield. And if you know anything about that band, you know they bring a ferocity to the stage unmatched this side of a terminal case of rabies. Well, Scroat Belly makes Split Lip look like the Partridge Family.

Over the years, people have tried to categorize the uncategorizable. It can’t be done my friends, and that’s what makes the legend of Scroat Belly endure. The feedback, the fiddles, the "what the hell?!?"

The Kansas Heartland can be a cold cruel place. Two of the most infamous things that it’s ever produced are In Cold Blood and Scroat Belly. When you can read the former for laughs you’ll be ready to understand the latter.

In Miller's Cave we'll go Sonic Spelunking in the murky backwaters and crevices of roots music. We'll dip our toes into the healing and heady waters of country, blues, soul, rockabilly, R&B, rock N roll and the weird and wonderful things in between, all guaranteed sequencer, sampler and synthesizer free. Here you'll find the characters, crackpots and forgotten geniuses whose contributions ricochet and reverberate through the past, present and future. Some of the artists you'll know well, some you might have heard just a hit or two from, and others you've only heard whispered rumors of at 3 am in the kitchen of a house party long ago.
